Several leading landscape architecture firms and the Idaho/Montana Chapter of ASLA have committed significant contributions to support the green roof ASLA is building on its headquarters in downtown Washington, DC (see LAND Online, November 21).
“Our commitment to and support of this important project are based on the confidence we have in demonstrating to developers and the general public how vitally important this technology is to the urban environment,” said Patrick Caughey, FASLA, president of Wimmer Yamada and Caughey, which contributed $5,000 to the green roof. “We are also confident that as landscape architects we are the most qualified in providing this expertise to the community.”
Project designer Michael Van Valkenburgh Associates, Inc., has pledged $5,000, and SWA Group and Sasaki Associates have each pledged $10,000 to the project.
“We are committed to encouraging green design in all our projects and make every effort to operate our own offices according to high green design standards,” said Sasaki’s Dennis Pieprz, Affiliate ASLA, and Jim Sukeforth in making the pledge. “This contribution to ASLA reinforces our commitment to these efforts, and we hope it will help in achieving the green roof in Washington, DC.”
The Idaho/Montana Chapter of ASLA has contributed $1,000 and has challenged other chapters to contribute as well. “It is our belief that this demonstration project will help showcase the skills and talents of landscape architects to the nation and the importance of mitigating the environmental impacts of humanity's improvements to the land,” said chapter president Keith Dixon, ASLA. “It is a small and expensive step, but an important step at many levels.”
Combined with personal pledges from Nancy Somerville, Dennis Carmichael, FASLA, Chris Dimond, FASLA, and Melissa Evans, ASLA, the total for contributions has risen to more than $46,000. Rising construction costs due to Hurricane Katrina have led to a $350,000 gap in funding for the project. In addition to cash contributions, ASLA is seeking product donations from key manufacturers and service providers.
Contributions from firms are deductible for federal income tax purposes (personal contributions are not) and may be pledged over three years, payable by December 31, 2008. To contribute, complete the online pledge/contribution form. Contributors receive a number of high-profile recognition benefits:
